Why Some Scholars Treat Jewellery Differently
Scholars differ on whether worn jewelry is zakatable. Understanding the different views helps you make an informed choice.
The majority of scholars say all gold and silver jewelry is zakatable. The Hanafi school exempts jewelry that is worn regularly. Both views have evidence, and you can follow either with sincerity.
The Majority Position
All jewelry is zakatable.
The Maliki, Shafi'i, and Hanbali schools hold that Zakat is due on all gold and silver jewelry, whether worn or not. Their evidence includes the general command to pay Zakat on gold and silver, and Hadith narrations about jewelry.
