Zakat and Student Loans

Student loans (in the UK) are usually not deductible because repayment depends on income and they may be written off. Scholars differ on this.

UK student loans are controversial for Zakat purposes. Most scholars say they are not deductible because repayment is conditional and uncertain.

Why Student Loans Are Different

Repayment is income-based. UK student loans are only repaid if you earn above a threshold. If you never reach that income, the loan is written off after 30 years. This makes it uncertain whether you will actually pay it back.
