Zakat on Emergency Funds
Emergency funds are zakatable. Even though you are saving this money for unexpected needs, it is wealth you own and control.
If you have an emergency fund, it is zakatable. The fact that you intend to keep it for emergencies does not exempt it from Zakat.
Why Emergency Funds Are Zakatable
You own and control the money.
Zakat is due on wealth that is in your possession and above nisab for one year. Your emergency fund meets both criteria. Even though you plan not to touch it except in emergencies, it is still yours and must be purified through Zakat.
