Zakat on Long-Term Investments

Long-term investments such as retirement accounts and buy-and-hold portfolios are zakatable if you can access the funds.

If you invest for the long term (decades rather than months), your investments are still zakatable. On your Zakat date, include the current value in your calculation.

What Counts as Long-Term?

Investments you hold for years. Long-term investments include retirement portfolios, index funds held for decades, or shares you plan never to sell. Even though you do not trade frequently, these are still wealth you own.
