Zakat on Property – The Key Rule

Property is only zakatable if you bought it to sell for profit. Your main home and rental properties for income are not zakatable.

Zakat on property depends on your intention. If you bought property to sell and make profit (like a developer), Zakat is due. If you bought it to live in or rent out, Zakat is not due on the property itself.

The Intention Principle

Why did you buy it? Islamic scholars say Zakat on property is based on intention. If you bought a house or flat intending to sell it for profit, it is zakatable. If you bought it to live in or to rent for income, it is not zakatable.
