Zakat on Your Main Home

Your main home is not zakatable. Zakat is only due on property bought to sell, not property you live in.

If you own the house or flat where you live, it is not zakatable. Zakat is not due on personal-use items, including your residence.

Why Main Homes Are Exempt

Personal-use property is not zakatable. Islamic scholars agree that items used for personal needs (your home, car, furniture, clothes) are not subject to Zakat. Zakat is due on wealth held for trade or investment, not things you use daily.
